Yearly Theme

In Pirkei Avot, Ethics of the Fathers (3:22), Rabbi Elazar ben Azarya teaches “Im ein kemach, ein Torah; im ein Torah ein kemach/ If there is no sustenance, there is no Torah; if there is no Torah there is no sustenance. Playing on these words, we have chosen as our adult education theme for this year: “Yesh Kemach! Yesh Torah!—Where there is sustenance there is Torah! During the year we will be exploring the relationship between physical sustenance, particularly food, and the world of Torah. Our theme will examine how Judaism has used food and food rituals to enhance learning. If you have suggestions for classes or programs that fit with this theme, please share them with Ellie Sternquist, adult education committee chair, or Rabbi Kadden. We will, of course, continue to offer Hebrew classes and Introduction to Judaism and we are offering an adult bar/bat mitzvah class in January.
