L’dor vador…From Generation to Generation

Adult Education 5771 (2010-2011)

Each morning in the K’dusha, contained within the Amidah, the central prayer of our liturgy, we recite the following words:

L’dor vador nagid godlecha ul’neitzach n’tzachim k’dushat’cha nakdish…

To all generations we will declare Your greatness, and for all eternity proclaim Your holiness. Your praise, O God, shall never depart from our lips.

What does this text teach us? That we are connected. We have roots that are deep. We speak the wisdom of the generations before us. We belong to a tradition with a long, rich history. We are linked to the past and to the future.

This year, in our adult education programming, we will be exploring this very topic of L’dor vador—from generation to generation—by looking at Judaism throughout the generations: how Judaism has changed, what our history has taught us, and how Reform Judaism, celebrating its 200th birthday this coming year, has transformed what it means to be Jewish. We invite you to join us on this journey of Jewish history and change and connection.
